EAN-14 Barcode Generator

An EAN-14 is the 14-digit carton barcode that retail systems also call a GTIN-14 and the supply chain calls ITF-14. It carries a packaging indicator, your company prefix, an item reference and a check digit. Enter 12, 13 or 14 digits below and export a print-ready symbol.

Type 12, 13 or 14 digits. A 13-digit GTIN-13 is converted to GTIN-14, a 13-digit payload gets its check digit, and 14 digits are validated.

EAN-14 vs EAN-13: which one do you print?

If the package is the thing a customer picks up and pays for, print EAN-13. If the package contains several of those things and travels to a warehouse, print EAN-14.

Rule of thumb. One product in one pack, sold alone → EAN-13. Multiple units bundled for shipping → EAN-14. When a new case pack changes the count, the item reference changes with it.

Common mistake. Printing an EAN-13 on a shipping case. The case will not scan at a distribution centre, and the retail unit inside loses nothing — the case simply has no usable code.

From EAN-13 to EAN-14 in one step

Type the 13-digit retail code into the generator above and the tool adds the packaging indicator and recomputes the check digit. Nothing else moves: the company prefix and item reference stay where they were, which is exactly what GS1 expects when the carton contains that item.

Need to go the other way — from a carton code back to the unit code — the check digit calculator has a two-way converter and will refuse a code whose check digit does not add up.

EAN-14 questions

Is an EAN-14 the same as a GTIN-14?

Yes. EAN-14 is the retail and marketplace name for the GTIN-14, the 14-digit code that identifies a case or carton. It is printed in Interleaved 2 of 5 with bearer bars — the symbol is usually called ITF-14 in GS1 documentation.

What is the difference between EAN-14 and EAN-13?

EAN-13 is the 13-digit barcode on the retail unit and is scanned at the checkout. EAN-14 is the 14-digit barcode on the carton and is scanned in the warehouse. If the package goes home with a shopper, use EAN-13; if it is a case of those packages, use EAN-14.

Can I turn a 13-digit EAN into an EAN-14?

Yes, and the generator does it for you. Type the 13 digits and it adds a packaging indicator in front and recalculates the check digit, so the item reference inside stays identical. Use the converter above to see both numbers side by side.

Which packaging indicator should I choose?

Start with 1, which most teams use for the standard case. Different pack levels — inner pack, full case, pallet — should carry different indicators so that a scanner can tell them apart. Indicators 0 to 8 are available for trade items.

Does an EAN-14 replace the barcode on the product itself?

No. The item keeps its EAN-13 retail symbol and the carton gets the EAN-14. Distribution centres need to scan both: the case code to receive the shipment, the unit code to sell it.

Do marketplaces accept a generated EAN-14 image?

Marketplaces generally ask for the number, not the image, and validate its check digit. Because this generator produces a compliant Interleaved 2 of 5 symbol at correct millimetre sizes, the same code works for the marketplace record and for the physical label.
